Well, we made it back home safe mid-afternoon yesterday. Couldn't have asked for nicer weather. What a diff from the campout last mo. Temp's in upper 70's and humidity < 25% & night time temp of 55°-60°.
This is lake Merwin, one of a chain of 3 lakes on the Lewis River on the S slope of Mt St. Helen. These lakes are water impoundments for electrical generation. Merwin has been around since 1931 and covers a little more than 4,000 acres. In the Mt canyons, this translates to a lake more than 5 mi long.
Fishing wasn't as good as we had hoped for but caught 3 keeper sized Kokanee and one nice trout. Caught a number of trash fish, OK to catch but not worth eating. Think some of the problem for the slow fishing is there is still a good hatch of bugs the fish can feast on and water temp. In the main part of the lake the fish are down about 50' and we weren't prepared for that depth. Water was very clear and could see schools of smaller fish around the shore and over to where the boat landing is, we saw a fairly large Muskee.
I didn't get around to taking many pics but we were at this same lake/campground 2 yrs ago so will sub a few pics from then. First pic is from Sat morning heading out on the lake. The remainder of the pics are from 2 yrs ago.
The next to last pic is of the boat moring area that is back in a small inlet. Come Sat morning it was completely filled. The last pic is of a bridge at the N end of the lake shortly before the camp enterence. There are Ospray nests at the top and if you look closely, you'll see one in the nest on the right. |
