Default Got me a new\used PHD last nite

Hi All,

Got a used PHD last nite. Friend of a friend kind of thing.
Couple a hundred bucks and came with an 8" auger and PTO shaft. Now just gotta figure out how to hook it up and use it.
Well since it looked well used, first cleaning it up and giving it a fresh coat of paint and then will figure out the rest.
At the price, was worth it since I have 15 holes and counting to dig and they want $10 a hole ( cheapest & only if I help ) to dig so pretty well pays for itself right away.

Actually, guy next door will probably use it first.

Hope I can get it figured out since I have a cultivator that I still haven't gotten the hang of. Must not be heavy enough since I can't really get it to dig in very well. Or, maybe top link too long ( or short ) considering I have a quick hitch on it.

Oh well, new toys to try out.

Have a great evening.

Tom

Congrats on the find - and the price. Check the point and cutting edges on the flight for wear, and check the oil in the gearbox. Since PHDs are among the worst of the PTO powered implements for injury, be sure you have all the guards in place on the PTO shaft, and use it safely,

Good luck with it.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the response.

Right after painting, going to check it all out and make sure it is full of oil.

I have read lots of posts about how dangerous these things are and am going to try to be real careful. That said, careful is a bit difficult for me as I just kind of jump into things but am going to be on guard for my own stupidity and think before I do things. As well, all PTO shields are in place.

First few holes should be interesting.

Thanks again and have a great evening.

While using this PHD keep your RPMs real low, the lowest possible without stalling your tractor. Only go in the ground lets say 1 ft at a time and pull it up and let it clean itself off. Keep doing this until you reached the depth you need. First time users can and will screw that thing into the ground until it reaches China Might as well leave it there after that real difficult getting it out is my point

Also have the correct shear bolts and have a lot of them handy - depending on the soil will determine if you are going to break just a few or a lot.

Its a cool implement, but a PIA to store and setup.....some of them have a handle that you can apply pressure (down force) or angling ability from a safe distance

Hi,

Thanks so much for the advice. Really appreciated.

Ground is clay but we have had rain every couple of days so not like concrete this year.

Was looking at it tonite after I gave it a 1st coat of paint and trying to figure it out. Looks interesting and I can see will have to be very careful.
Not quite sure how everything hooks up but the guy next door has used them before so we should be able to figure it out.

Can also understand what you mean when you say will be a PIA to store.
Darn thing sure is not light and difficult to move around.
2nd coat of paint tomorrow morning.

Anyways, thanks again for the advice. Need all that I can get.

Have a great evening.

If you don't have a user's manaul, you can download one from a website such as Woods, Bush Hog, etc., if you can't download one for your specific make and model.

Have a good one

Hi,

Yes, going to have to look for a user's manual. Guess pretty well anyone would do so will just take one of the suggestions offered.

I think has had some fairly heavy use as the holes in the auger that came with it are a little elongated. Not a problem as the guy next door has been waiting for me to get the PHD and was over this morning to see if it came yet. He told me to bring the whole thing over to him and he would check it out, check the gear oil and weld up the elongated holes in the auger.
Think he is just dying to try it out himself even though he has had some experience with them before.
Or maybe just trying to be helpful and keep busy as he just unexpectedly retired for medical reasons.
Anyways, after the 2nd coat of paint dried, I hauled it over to him to fiddle with.
He has even offered to drill the holes as long as I mark them out for him.
Will wait and see on that.

Paul, real neat PHD stand. Do you have any plans for it or know where I could get some.

Again, thanks for all the help and advice. It is appreciated.

Have a good one.
