Default PTO Shredder: newly acquired used Toy!

I just stumbled on this PTO Shredder and made the deal.
It is a Super Apache 240C by WW Grinder (Long out of biz).
Chipper chute on rear and the shredder portion works like a grinder or a mill. It has steel grate with round holes and the shredding teeth keep grinding down the material until it will pass through the holes. I understand there were 3 size grates, but, I only have the one that is on this unit.

My best research is that these units were made in the mid to late 80s, WW Grinder then they sold out andalong the way were picked up by Troy, and formed the basis for their Tomahawk chipper line.

This machine had a vine wrapped around the shaft in the chipper portion, causing alot of drag to the unit, and, the 3 drive belts were loose. So, the combination effect was slipping belts, poor grinding. All it took was cutting out the vine, and making the belt tension adjustment and it spins up like new. All of the bearings are tight. New belts will come soon.

Nice unit...while you're waiting on the belts...you might check on how you sharpen your cutters...

    Thanks Kenny!
I didn't go away intentionally, or anything, just had a lot of things come up, and have been tied up, non-stop. It was more like being dragged away.

It's good to see all the familiar faces and the MU site is looking better than ever!

Back to the shredder for a minute. I am already thinking of a modification.
i was shredding leaves/grass clippings yesterday at the compost pile and noticed it piles up underneath fast! Could use some more ground clearance to avoid cosntantly having to clear out underneath to make room for more shredded material.

If you notice the angle of the PTO shaft (in pic) when the shredder is on terra firma, you can see it is at fairly steep downward angle.
I'm thinking of some telescoping leg/supports to bring the unit up to wehre the shaft would be closer to parallel with the ground. Thsi should give a lot more celarance underneath to to let the shreddings pile up taller before needing to move the machine or "heaven forbid" use a rake or pitchfork to move the post-shreddings underneath.

Paul, no need to check, it's obvious.
the cutters are in good shape, this unit hasn't seen a lot of use/abuse.

The shredder teeth are flat stock, easy enough to square the edges.
And easy enough to find some carbon steel to replace them when the time comes.

The chipper cutters are the typical bevelled chisel-style blades. The chipper sub-assembly has a "trap door" like an inspection door, which makes getting to the blades pretty straight-forward. They too aren't in bad shape, no chips or dings in the actual cutting edges, so, a quick session over my water wheel grinding stone or Belt sander will bring them back to 100%.

Always nice to find a score like this. Minor issue the prior owner had no clue what was wrong and just wanted it out of their sight. Hope it gives you many hrs of trouble free service.
