    Default Boom Pole for FEL

    Hi Guys,

Task first. Want to build a garage with 10 or 12' walls ( height ). Would like to fabricate on the ground and then lift with the FEL into position.

Problem, do not have enough lift height on the loader.

Does anyone sell FEL boom poles ( not sure if that is what you would call them ) or does anyone have any thoughts on how to fabricate.

Would keep lift to only 1' or so off the ground and walls would be kept to
8' lenghts for ease of handling.

    Any thoughts or ideas ?

    Thanks
    Tom

Plenty of FEL boom poles out there Tom... provided, of course, that you are equipped with skid steer quick attach...

    Markham Welding - Tree Boom

... or, alternatively, are willing to use a three point hitch boom pole...

King Kutter Boom Pole, Model# BP | Scoops | Northern Tool + Equipment

... perhaps with a skid steer quick attach to 3-point adapter.

I am not able to wrap my head around how much weight you are trying to lift.
But i do see two choices.
1> Fabing your own using the above ideas. A welder and some cutting tools.
2> Renting a machine built for the job = Telehandler

Dog's first point is excellent... particularly if you don't have SSQA. Lots of folks have rolled their own with relatively little actual steel fabrication and often using steel pipe with tensioned chains for support. Doesn't get much cheaper than that (even in Canada!).

You do it the way it has always been done...use a couple of LONG 2x4s with doubleheaded nails on the ends of your fabricated sidewall as supports...then walk the wall up to vertical with one of more bodies pushing...when you stop to take a brake those free-swinging 2x4s on the ends will keep the wall from falling down...If the wall is long enough make sure one of those free-swinging supports is also attached to the center of the wall...

Now if you are completely short of personnel to help...then use a shorter pair of 2x4s for the center support and place it in the bucket...so you lift and drive the tractor until the wall is ALMOST VERTICAL...then set your tractor brake and add you diagonal stops...(2x4 nailed to vertical wall and the floor plates which are parallel to the wall you are raising)

You get one end basically vertical...then get the other end vertical...may require an assist of your tractor, i.e. a little, very little push or lift of the bucket...then nail in the other diagonal...

Finally remove your external support 2x4s and the pushing 2x4s...and get ready to do the next wall...

One suggestion that might help with the walls is to build them as panels, say 10-12 ft long. Secure them together once in the vert position. Right now this is how I intend to build the walls on the shop I intend to build come spring.

An idea I got from my son, Jeff_1965, is, in place of drywall for the interior covering is to use pegboard. Lower cost than drywall, easy to install, will help hold insulation in place and an added bonus I can use the pegboard to hold tools and storage bins just about anywhere I want. Would need to keep in mind reinforcement that might be necessary for the real heavy stuff making use of the pegboard.
Practice makes perfect: After many decade of hard work and practice, it now takes almost no effort to get tired.

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks for the input.

Situation is this. Have a SIL that turns every job into a job that has to be done in 1 weekend and truthfully, I am getting too old for that.
We did a 45 x 12 ' deck with a 12 X12 extenstion down the side of the house and a 12X12 pentagon on the end corner in a weekend.
Replaced 10 windows in the house which included tearing off a double bay window and rebuilding a new one from scratch.
That kind of tired and I mean tired. I am getting old.

So, was looking for ways to do much of it on my own and at my own pace hence there will be a lack of manpower ( me ).
What I had in mind was to build the 2X6X10X8' long wall on the ground and then lift it up with the tractor unto the base plate. Keep the walls to 10 or 12' tall to match the house which is a raised ranch.
My loader does not have enough height lift so was looking for something I could attach to the loader that would add to the lift height.
Kind of put a couple of straps on the top of the framing, lift it up into position, nail it down and put in the outside temp supports.
That way I could do in myself.

Any thoughts besides ..... is this guy nuts ?

    Thanks

Being a one man show more often than not myself, I feel your pain... and knowing all too well the sometimes frustrations of working alone, I can tell you that any attachment that makes a tough solo job go safer or easier is good with me!

But Dog was right: The cheapest options are all going to be in the build-it-yourself category. However, if you don't have SSQA and/or aren't in a mood to start fabricating, how about considering this combo:

The $100ish KK or TSC boom pole I mentioned above...

in combination with this new $100ish gizmo being sold on eBay:

3 POINT ATTACHMENT ADAPTER bucket loader kubota quick - eBay (item 290277844206 end time Dec-01-08 09:42:39 PST)
