Default Bushhog 2615 gear box help

My Bush hog 2615 (older model) has water in the middle gear box. Unfortunately the gear box does not have a drain hole at the base. I have taken a suction gun and tried sucking out as much of the oil/water as possible. It seems the gears don't allow me to go deep enough in the unit to remove all the fluid from it. I've tried using alcohol trying to dry up the water with no luck. As a last option I'm now thinking that I will have to remove the gear box and drain it from the vent hole. Then add a drain hole while it is off so I can use a drill press and tap.

Does anyone have a better idea? Having pulled a couple gear boxes off before, the thought of pulling off the blade pan and then the gear box itself isn't something ever I look forward to. I've smashed more than one finger in the process.

Seems inevitable to me...that gearbox must be removed-better start soaking all the bolts with PB Blaster ASAP.

To get every speck of water and contaminated oil out of the geabox, you'll need to turn it upside down to drain.

FWJ, I was dreading this was going to be my option. Thanks for the reply.

Sprayed the PB Blaster last night and plan on reapplying some today and tomorrow. Then if the Son can help, will start tearing it off on Monday evening after work.

I have already prepared a list of colorful metaphors to yell as things don't come apart as planned.

If anyone is free on Monday evening I'll be providing refreshments.

Would be a good idea to get pics as you go, would make a good maintenance sticky.

    Thanks,

    Will

Gonna replace all the seals while you have it apart?

For what I was planning the only seal I'm aware of is the one on the vent/fill hole that I have already made a new one for. I was planning on just removing the box and turning it upside down to drain out the fluids. Add drain hole and plug and replace box on unit.

Keenyd, is there other seals that I should be aware of? I will want to have the parts lined up before we start tearing the unit down. Any info you can provide is appreciated.

There should be a oil seal where the shaft exits the gearbox...
