    Default Built A 4-Way Log-Splitter Wedge!

I've been wanting to make one of these for a while, and since I can't split firewood for all the rain.. I thought I would go ahead and get this made!

The 4-way wedge should make it a lot faster splitting firewood!... Last year I cut 17 cords, and this year I'll have more but I'm still way behind!... I was finished with firewood this time last year.

On my log-splitter.. The factory wedge is welded to a ''guide'' that rides on the frame, and at first I thought I would have a problem mounting the 4-way wedge because of that... But, In the end it turned out better than I thought it would!

All the metal was scrap that I've had for years... I got it when I was a welder underground in the coalmines... It's hardened metal, and I forgot what it even came off of in the mines... So I thought it would be great to use as a splitter wedge, BUT.. It sure was hard to grind down to get a sharp edge on it!!

I wanted to fix it so it would be quick and easy to take off when I split a very large block of wood!... With the hole in the factory wedge, I welded a 1-1/4'' piece of pipe to fit in the hole to mount it!... It turned out great!

I can also pull the 4-way wedge out a little to center it more over a block of wood!

The first victim was a block of wild Cherry!

You can tell in the picture that I pulled it out some to center it in the block!... I may build another one, and make the side wings a little wider!

To get 4 pieces of firewood like in the picture... I would have had to run the single wedge down 4 times... Done this in one run!.. I don't know why I didn't make one of these years ago... I've been using the single wedge for 10 years!

I got the wedge real good and sharp.. It will cut paper!.... First thing the wife said when she seen it was:.. ''I'm sure you will cut a few fingers off by next week!''

*The pictures didn't come out in order. I guess because I named them, But you get the idea! *

And yes... please watch those fingers!

Must be sooooo nice not having to worry a hoot about the price of home heating oil next winter.

Thanks!.. That was an easy build, But the hard part was sharpening the hardened metal!... I used my last 3 cheap HF grinder wheels!.. Had one explode into pieces that I couldn't even find them!... I'm going to start using Dewalt grinder wheels... They seem to last a lot longer!

Yeah, I'll watch the fingers... Watch this YouTube 4-way Wedge of a guy that uses the ''wings'' to split wood after he splits a block open!.. He made his from a JD plow!

I watched his video before I made mine.

    Thanks, Jayster!

I hated to see that Cherry fall... We had a storm here months ago with strong winds that broke off several large trees about 40 feet from the ground on my property, and the Wild Cherry was one of them!

I still have a lot of them left, and plan to haul them to a sawmill!

    Thanks!

Yeah, It should speed things up a lot!.. Last week when I went to the doctor, I stopped by TSC on the way home... They had the log-splitters like yours sitting by the front door!

When mine breaks down.. That's what I plan to buy!.. And it came with a 4-way wedge!

I'm not getting to split wood because of the bad weather... So I may have to hire Jose A and Jose B to finish it!!

Sorry for the large bump, but how's it holding up? any problems with it, or is it running like a champ?

I may need to do a similar project next year, so I'm starting to see whats out there
Still looking, trying to figure out what to get

    Welcome to MU!...

It held up fine last year, and I never had any problems with it!... I'll be using it in a few weeks when I start cutting more firewood.

If you build one, Try and make the ''side wings'' a little wider!

gotcha, I'll keep that in mind. I (realistically) won't be building one for at least another year or two.

    Thanks for the advice!
