Default Old 22's

Got out to do a bit of Christmas shopping today, and was surprised to find that there appears to be an abundance of old 22's hitting the market. Sales guys in a couple of shops said that most people were picking up new guns these days, because the prices were lower. I think that this may be the time to look at some of the older models!

Whats bringing down the prices of new Guns thesed days? The holiday shopping or just the market in general? always thought its not an inexpensive sport or hobby so they are trading in their old for new these days?

Think you'll find a lot of the older guns have better materials expecially in the area of the stock.

I have several older 22's. Have an High Standard model B, and older S&W K22 and a Marlin 39 from about 1940 and has only had maybe 1 box of ammo run through it.

People want new, and the new market still maintains it's position price wise. On the other hand, some of the old guns being traded are a much better value, as I was telling Killer_B the other day. When I look for something today, I look for the older, quality firearm. Something along the lines of a Winchester 75, Remington 37, Savage 23AA, you just can't replace these guns. It's true, there are many high quality new guns available, but for the price, you may find 2 or 3 of the older specimens. Over the course of time, being well maintained, the older guns can be enjoyed and still represent a good value and investment many years into the future.

Hi Gunmaker, not to hijack this thread but would you have any idea what a

Savage 22 Hi-power with the intrcangable 410 barrel is worth? My dad has it and it was his grandfather's. It is in good shape. I shot my first animal with it year's ago ( a wood chuck)

Thanks
Rick

I can give you an idea, but I need more info: Find the model number on the gun, the serial number, the latest patent dates, barrel length, checkering on stock, those should give me a good start. Also see if both barrels are serial numbered the same.
Savage manufactured three models that come to mind in 22 hi-power, the Model 1899H, the Model 99E, and the Model 99F featherweight. Only the Model 99F featherweight take-down was also available with a 410 barrel.
This rifle has a good value, off the top of my head (condition dependent) somewhere in the $800 to $2000 range, depending on buyer variables.
Please gather the info and PM it to me, ( don't post it - there have been instances where guns have been falsely reported stolen using info posted online) and I'll be happy to give you a better idea. She sounds like a keeper!
