Keyswitch itself causing the issue? anyway to bypass keyswitch?
Hi Guys,
So, ben having start problems on and off for a bit and finally wouldn't start, only click from starter, etc.
Pulled the starter and took it out for a rebuild. Now appears maybe did not need it as still have start problems.
Sometimes click, sometimes not, once or twice start, couple time bendix would kick out the gear and then quit right away.
So, cleaned up the battery terminals, checked all grounds and still had the problem.
Took starter back out and took starter and battery out for testing ( to another place ). Both are fine.
Mechanic suggested that it was a bad ground somewhere. Also suggested jumpering from 1 terminal to another terminal on the starter and if goes, then a ground problem.
Cleaned up all grounds again to the point on grinding them down to bare metal again. Still same problem,
Jumper it and starts right up in the key on position.
Know the grounds aren't bad.
Can it be a safety switch ? Even though the tractor starts in a kind of hot wired state ?
At issue is the orange\white wire going from the starter\solenoid to the engine wiring harness.
Few Wiring diagrams attached.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Tom

Tom, not familiar with your model so just shooting from the hip. Since you've done the most common things like cleaning terminals and checking for bad grounds, the next place I'd check is the starter solenoid. Not impossible you have a bad connection across the contactor and contact pins internally.
Have had a couple solenoids go bad on me. Took both apart and found on one it had been arcing so bad internally contacts were pitted bad and only made good electrical connection once in a while. The other was much worse.
Practice makes perfect: After many decade of hard work and practice, it now takes almost no effort to get tired.

Hi Guys,
Late night.
Thanks for the responses.
So, with jumper between the solenoid connector ( clipped on there ) and starter connection ( just touching with other end of alligator clip ), the tractor will turn over immediately and with no problem. Will not start unless key is in the start position. With key in start position, tractor will start with no problem.
So, leads me to believe starter\solenoid in good shape plus I have had them rebuilt and retested ( appears rebuilt for nothing ). With starter hooked up properly, the tractor will not turn over and solenoid does not even click or clicks rarely.
Seems like a bad connection somewhere. Glow plugs however do work.
Thoughts ??
Thanks
Tom
Tom,
Sounds like your only way is going to be having an assistant turn the switch to start and hold it there while you check for voltages. If it was me I would start at the + terminal on the starter and work my way back.

Hi Mark,
I guess you are right. Going to have to fiddle with this for a bit.
Tried bypassing the seat switch with a jumper wire but did nothing.
Thanks for the ideas and have a great day.
