Yes, this was JD's effort to tap into the Chinese Market...The tractors are currently scheduled for internal consumption of China...

GM has a similar operation going on in China...All bigwigs are driving BUICKS...

Like I have said before...my concern is when JD Chinese stuff finds its way to our shores...BUT, I also remember when MADE IN JAPAN was a byword for CRAP...

Only time will tell if the Chinese manufacturers will reach for high quality status or if they'll continue plodding along making better but not superior products like so many other developing countries. (no wait, that's the USA on the couch!)
The Japanese were, and are, highly motivated people, their culture is geared to efficiency. Not so much the Chinese........but we shall see, I'm watching.

Hi all,

Yes, Deere has been fairly aggressive in buying in China. Was only last year or the year before where they bought heavily into Benye Tractors. Mahindra had previously looked at Benye but then Deere stepped in.

Supposedly the idea was to cover the Chinese domestic market and Aftrica where Benye was selling a fair amount of product.

I had been emailing back and forth with someone who worked there and he was quite adamant about the fact that Deere was pushing for the Chinese\African markets but were also looking to build something for the North American market at a cut rate price.

He had sent me some pics of the Deere execs sitting on Benye tractors with big smiles on their faces after the deal was signed. Quite odd pictures seeing Deere guys sitting on Red tractors and smiling about it.

Guess the only time the color green counts is with money.

Later and have a good one.

Tom

Related to the deforestation comment.... My conservationist/DNR uncle was just over in China on business of some sort. Said it's the strangest thing he's ever seen. From what I recall of the conversation, you don't see any wildlife when driving through the rural countryside.... no birds (no sparrows!), no animals. But then you get to the border of a national preserve and it's like a rainforest; wildlife all over. I guess the animals all know that it's the only safe place around I would assume the communist government has a pretty strict shoot-on-sight policy for poachers.

From personal experience, the Koreans and Japanese I've met would agree with that statement After working for years in the computer industry my scale of quality for Asian products is as follows (best to worst): Korea, Japan, Taiwan, then China. Korea makes some darn good products (especially electronics). But having worked for a Chinese-owned company once-upon-a-time, I don't buy Chinese unless I have to.

I find your rankings most interesting Mark. I would have assumed that Japan was still number one in quality of electronics (think: Sony) followed, in order, by Taiwan, Korea, other miscellaneous Asian/Pacific countries and finally China. In regard to Korea, I guess I still can't shake the old image of crappy Gold Star (now LG) and Samsung appliances & electronics out of my mind even though I'm aware of how far they've advanced. Recently, a client told me his horror story about a very expensive wide-screen HDTV from Samsung going bad right after the warranty expired and ultimately having to be thrown away when the cost of fixing it could not possibly be justified. He is a Sony man through and through today! Just mention the word "Samsung" and he will throw a brick at you!

In regard to Taiwan, they make the only hand tools I would ever consider buying made in all of Asia. I have found the strength, quality and value there to be nothing short of remarkable in most cases. But please don't ask me about Chinese tools. As far as I am concerned, they are virtually all worthless throw-aways.

I think I've mentioned before that I've been to China on several occasions and also to Taiwan, all on business.

Capitalism is new to China but is very much alive and growing by leaps and bounds. You will find companies producing things that range in qlty from junk to world class. I've been in both kinds.

Don't recall seeing a lot of Buicks in China but know Chrysler is a big player there. Company I worked for had a Dodge Caravan and one evening had dinner with a local friend and some of his friends, some people of importance in the city. I got a ride back to the hotel in a new Jeep Grand Cherokee one the the fellows owned. VW is also a big player in China.

In this area I see Haier appliances, this is China's biggest appliance mfgr and considered a qlty brand in a number of countries where they are marketed. I've not read of anyone having real qlty problems with the Chinese build Honda knock-off small engines. I have a Kipor genset, made in China but has read they are tied in with Phillips. They are the #2 or #3 maker of genset sets in Europe. Have also read a number of forum comments on Kipor and no real qlty issues. China does make qlty products and are a force to reckon with but far too many co's are importing product of questionable qlty due strictly due to low prices. Like with other Far East countries, China is still in a learning mode but as experience grows, qlty will increase to point where they are seen as a world player and on par with the other Far East countries are now.
