Default a true story

So, today was load up the batwing (2 trucks) and other stuff (trimming, blowing, LGM, etc) and go down about 30 miles south (an hour or so) to do this industrial property we've done for a few years.

A good solid days work and it was hot today (90's), and we left early to beat traffic. So, right at 8:01, the phone rings and it's Bob.

I take care of Bob's sprinklers, have for 4 or 5 years, it's not something I advertise, but I used to do a lot of sprinkler work, so no big thing.

"Brian," he says, "I have a big problem, they took those bushs out in the front where all those flowers and teh drip line is and they ripped up a bunch of pipe and such, can you get to me today? They are going to put rock down by Friday"

Well, damn. Today is a long day, tomorrow is going to be 6am to 7pm (or more), I've got a new mower coming, I'm fat and old and tired, etc, etc, etc

Sure, i say, I'll try to get over there tonight. (of course if I need parts, I'm screwed), but I'll try. After a long day and still not set up for tomorrow I hustle over there.

I get over there, I turn on the zone. I see one drip spray nozzle that hose a cut hose. I cut off 1/4" of 1/4" hose and stick it back on. I change out one little drip spray nozzle that is plugged up.

I don't see anything else. There is no hole, no water running, etc

I ring the doorbell and go "uh Bob, what's the problem here?

Oh, those couple drip lines there. (it's spaghetti pipe, not the 3/4 drip line)

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ok.
Took me about 5 minutes. The zone still worked fine.
This was an emergency??????

Well, it cost him $80.
For something anybody could have done with a pair of scissors.

I used to own an ant farm but had to give it up. I couldn't find tractors small enough to fit it.

Brian my dad always told me you get paid for what you know not what you do. If a property owner knows nothing about the system and can't fix a small problem, more money for you.

There's an old musty joke goes like this:

A machine at the plant just quit working one day. Of course, all production stopped, as Murphy attacked the most critical operation on the line. The plant manager called in a repariman, and begged him to get it going again. The repairman asked a few questions, examined the machine, and opened his toolbag. He retrieved a small hammer, and gave the machine one light tap. The machine promptly started working, and the manager was elated.

He asked the repairman what he owed, and the repairman replied, "Three humdred dollars." The manager didn't want to be though of as a tightwad, but he was perplexed that a single hammer tap was worth $300. So, he asked the repairman if he could provide an itemized invoice for the accounting folks. The repairman replied, "Sure."

Here is the bill he presented:

One tap with hammer: $1.00
Knowing where to hit: $299.00

Regards

Fred
