I don't have a dog in the fight so to speak but do have a suggestion to offer. Not knowing how many are in competition for the work charging anything for going out to the site for a look and an estimate may or may not fly. I do think in todays world and cost of fuel, I think in my ads I might say free est if within x miles of y. If you have to travel further then there is a nom charge to cover transportation cost. I'd find this the fairest for all and those actually contracting for work aren't having to pay for those just shopping. If you have to charge for the est trip, if you got the work, then the initial charge would be credited towards the complete job.

Seems fair to me and customers are getting a fair break for not having to pay for those long trips for nothing.

I don't think that I can put that up front in my ads and postings. It may be something more appropriate to discuss once a potential client calls from 1-2 hours away... or maybe not depending on the size/length of the job and potential for good, profitable work.

My flyers and FAQ already address my defined service area... and maybe that statement needs a little tweaking as well. I don't wish to scare off potential work... but it is clear that a small job 1-1/2 hours away requiring more than one trip to move equipment is going to be a very tough thing to sell at a competitive price.

Default Free estimates

You have to size the customer up to determine if you are JUST providing THE OTHER BID...

I used to own an ant farm but had to give it up. I couldn't find tractors small enough to fit it.

Oh, it certainly has happened before... and it's bound to happen again. Sometimes it's very hard to tell based on initial contact alone.

When it is local, I really don't mind so much as I enjoy talking with people about their projects and figuring out how best to do their job. And believe me, the recent addition of the "ULDM" to the fleet has made that job a heckuva lot easier. Having expanded non-rental options is very cool.
