Default Buying new vs. used

Well, I need to do something about my loader tractor. It's a IH 454 and it needs some major work. The differential is locked in, tearing up even hard packed surfaces when turning, high range only works half the time, and numerous other small issues. What I need is a 40-45 hp tractor with loader and minimum two remotes in the back. I also want to SSL style quick attach on the loader so I can swap attachments with the Toolcat and my CTL. Third function hydraulics would be great as well, but not necessary, I could run a pair of hoses along the boom and use one of the rear remotes. Trying to find a used machine set up this way is next to impossible. Buying the thing and then installing the necessary equipment is within two or three thousand of the quotes I have been getting for new tractors. I personally think that saving that small amount of money is worth the headache of purchasing a tractor that I really don't the history of. What do you think? BTW quotes are for a Kubota L4240, Case IH Farmall 45, and Kioti DK45.

Well, the major advantage of NEW is that you have a warranty and therefore a service department to fix your tractor...

Of the three mentioned...which of the dealerships has a GOOD service center?

I don't think that what you are asking for is all that uncommon. But that said, if you can afford brand new, buy brand new. I couldn't... but I've been perfectly happy with the "slightly used" tractor/FEL/BH I bought that was less than 2 years old when I bought it. I saved a chitload of money. I also got the remainder of the manufacturer's 3-year warranty.

The only tractor I probably wouldn't buy "slightly used" is a Kubota... not because it is a bad machine; but rather, because used prices vs. new prices do not justify the (typically small) savings. At least that's the situation in my (New England) area. I suppose this may be true of Deere tractors as well. I just haven't been watching the used market for lime green Deeres that closely lately. For all other brands, "slightly used" should represent a considerable savings over brand spanking new.

You can get some good financing on new tractors.

Correct! I should have mentioned that. All bets are off if you're financing! If that's the case, buying new makes perfect sense.

Dougster,
I can find plenty in that range with one remote and fel. Try finding one with two remotes that's where it gets difficult. I only found one within a 500 mile radius of me and it is a Kubota L4330 with over 8,000 hrs on it, not to mention it is over 250 miles away. Most places want a min $1,500 to install another remote.

Do you have an MF dealer in your area?

Have a look at the 1600 series, or if you want total no frills, look at the 2600 (not the GC line) of tractors.

If you can't find one with two remotes, you can pick up a Fasse hydraulic multiplier for under $500.00.

$1,500 doesn't sound right. My Mahindra/TYM second rear remote set kit was $529.00 (including shipping) and I installed it myself. The only installation difficulty came from having been supplied with one wrong part. MahindraUSA eventually remedied the situation with the correct part and all has been well ever since.

The prices have gone up Doug. I was looking the other day and the remote kit less installation is just under $1000.00.
