Friend brought over his Remington 12 ga. 1187 today, after spending the day deer hunting. He complained that the gun would fail to fully eject, and miscycle after each shot. Dismantling the gun I found that the problem was caused by dirt and fouling. The 1187, a semi-automatic, cycles by allowing gases from the fired cartridge to escape from two small ports in the barrel and supply pressured gases to a piston which drives the bolt back to cycle the action. I found that one of the port was totally obstructed, the other dirty, the piston was fouled and the seals dirty and dried out. After a thorough cleaning and proper lubrication of the assembly, I reassembled it and tested it's function, which now appears normal. The seals in this gun can distintegrate so much that they may in time require replacement. Remington does have a service kit for this application. Gotta clean em if you want to rely on them!  |
