Default why no down pressure on most three points

why do they not make the three point so that it has down pressure on most tractors...not that it is needed in all applications...but it would be nice to have....how expensive are the kits to add it to ones tractor....do not plan on doing it right away bc my tractor is too new..but was curious for later down the road...

I believe most tractors are designed that way because application of down-pressure at the 3-point would reduce down-pressure (i.e., weight) on the rear tires where it's most needed... eventually reaching a point where the tractor would no longer be able to move forward.

Secondarily, the majority of modern 3-point implements are probably not designed to accept much in the way of down-pressure exerted by the 3-point. I can easily imagine instances where the implement's 3-pt support structure could be damaged in the blink of an eye depending on the level of down-pressure exerted by the tractor.

The main reason is traction. If your where to put down pressure on the 3PH then you will also effectively take weight off the rear wheels reducing traction. It's far better to add weight to an implement like a box blade if you need it to cut better.
There could be a argument made for implements like post hole digger's (PHD's) that would benefit from down pressure and not steal traction, but there are down pressure kits available from some PHD manufacturers for this reason.
Some will argue a safety factor as well...can't quote the reason's off the top of my head...
Only some LARGE AG tractors are available today with down pressure.

Hope this helps some...

thanks Kennyd...I thought they may make the down pressure kits for use of implements where traction is not needed...as of now I do not have many implements but do plan on getting a PHD and a BB and I am sure a lot more...lol...just have to make atleast the first payment on the tractor before I start spending all my money on implements...thanks again for the useful info...and quick responses

No way! Dougster is old, senile, half-blind and types with one finger.

Well, maybe two on a good day.
