Default 2520 50 hour trans service how to do it right.

I thought i would put together a little tutorial on how service the trans on a JD 2520 , and do it right. on all boards no one really ever does it the right way. and no one has ever explain it with pictures. so i decided to give it a try. Big thanks go's to Kenny and my JD dealer for getting me on the right track. As you all know the manual is a joke on the 2520 , and most info is
incorrect. well i am going to use this whole thread to get you on the right path with pictures. I spent the whole day doing the 50 hour service on my 2520. i am very anal being a car guy.i replaced everything all filters and fluids. everything but coolant. i dont miss nothing. before we get started on the trans a few notes. manual says front end holds 4 quarts 80/90 gear lube. this is not right. if done right and you drain all three plugs left wheel , right wheel and center. it holds 5 quarts. Also when changing the oil and filter. manual says it hold 3 quarts with filter. this is incorrect. if you install a new filter it holds 4 quarts even.

Now on to the trans service. ok first you need a 5 gallon bucket.
put it under the trans right to the right of the mid mount PTO shaft.
this is your main drain plug.
here it is.

once you have drained all fluid and it stops. move bucket over and drain the spin on trans filter. the manual shows a canister filter you have to remove. this is wrong. it is a spin on filter just like a car.
here is a pic

Now you have pulled the filter and it is draining. you need to drain the gear reduction houseings on both sides. people forget to do this. i got almost 4 quarts and some metal shaveings from them. you need to do it. here is a pic of me showing you the left and right side location.

once all fluid is drained from all locations. you want to clean the suction screen . it is located on the back of the tractor. right below the site glass
under the PTO shaft. first pull the pipe plug and let fluid drain. not to much will come out. then take the 2 10MM bolts out and remove the cover. and you will see the screen. you do not haft to remove the right 3 point arm as stated in the book.

look at these pictures. and you will freak out. i would clean it as soon as 50 hours on any tractor. look at what my screen looked like when i removed it.

Ok so i clean the screen and megnets inside. besure to take them out and clean them well. and cleaned the cover and the houseing. and slid the clean screen back in then you just replace the cover and the 2 10mm bolts. and the plug. and you are set. make sure when you install the screen that the magnets inside are faceing down. and replace all your drain plugs and new spin filter. and add fluid. and now your the man , and its done right. for another 200 hours..
I hope this will help people understand better
how to service there 2520.

Best post ever on this subject - fantastic post and thank you very much, you made it simple and easy!

How did you clean the screen like that? Looks new, do they suggest replacing the screen?

Duc its not hard at all. once you pull the magnets out of the screen , just tap the screen on a paper towel. and 90 % will come off.
then spray with carb cleaner. from the inside out. and blow with air hose. and it looks like new. No you never need to replace the screen if its not damaged.

Thanks for the complement. i knew this needed to be done for a long time.
no boards have much info about this on a 2520. with some help from Kenny. i was able to put this together. so the next guy would not haft to search every forum. and find nothing. and what i did find was done all wrong. some dont remember to clean the screen , and never do thay remove old fluid from gear reduction houseings. and thay hold a pretty good bit.

Hey Chris, try using 'brake cleaner' to clean metal parts. It removes any oil/grease, and leaves no residue afterwards. You can actually paint a surface after it has been cleaned with brake clean. I've been told that 'Carb Cleaners' can damage certain metals, and it does leave a solvent residue.
