My two consistant complaints with the L 48 is refueling the tractor and the mid range being two or so miles per hour slower than I like,, Other than this, I find the machine hard to beat.

"this morning I woke up with nothing to do, it is now afternoon and I have over half of it done".

996: Thanks for posting the specs. I had not seen the comparison with the JD 110. It beats what I had.

Larry: There seems to be many that agree with you. I run mine in Medium.
Half-fast is more my speed anyway. My only complaint so far is trying to do a braked turn. I thought I had small feet but still find it hard to get both feet on the right side. Seems like our old F-14 had hand brakes which worked pretty well. I pulled a quick U-turn once and ended up with the drag climbing up the rear tire. Got it off just before my Dad showed up. Whatcha doing.... nothen.

Default 3 point hitch control

I don't have a shop manual yet for my L48. Does anyone know if the lever that controls the 3 point hitch positon has a tension adjustment. Mine seems to be really stiff. It dried out enough that I finally got to use the box blade and find it a bit anoying to tug on the lever harder than I think I should have to when grading. Also, speaking of shop & parts manuals, where do most of you order from?

I bet the lever needs some good lubrication - other than that I dont have access to the manuals, sorry -

Thanks! I'll try some lube. It looked like the shaft just ran through a pivot hole on the outer end. Kevin, please look up the parts manual too. I read somewhere that the shop manual doesn't show the parts breakdown.

I have both manuals although one has gone missing and I don't know why. Don't be surprised at the costs,, they are not cheap.

Lube fixed the problem. It wasn't in the linkage. It was dry where it goes into the top of the tran. WD40 followed by some 10w30. Previous owner must not have used the 3 point hitch for anything. I can't believe someone would have used it like it was for very long. I had to take the panel off in front of the seat to get to it.
Kevin: I'll get back to you on the manuals. I don't know when I didn't have shop manuals on anything that went out of warranty.

Default Front axle guards

I had read on the forums that some were having problems with bending the front axle guards. Well now I can add my name to the list. Only this time I had the solution...add the bolt to the bottom. Those guards are so heavy that I didn't think much was going to bend them unless I got hung up on a big rock. Well it seems that some of the shale I'm working in gets turned sideways when it fractures and if it ends up between your tracks it can stick up just enough to catch it when you back up. The left guard hung down about an inch below the axle and once something caught on it and pulled in down some more it was set to catch on everything. At first check I didn't think the axle was tapped for a bolt but after bending the guard back for the second time using my 2# ballpeen and anvel, I crawled under for a closer look. It was tapped! I was told that this L48 came out in Dec of 2004 for those who need to know. I didn't have a metric bolt handy, so swaped out a metric bolt for a SAE and used the metric on the axle. Gotta get some metrics next time I stop in at the dealer. Couldn't find many fine threaded metrics at Tractor Supply last time I was in. I'm up to about 65 hrs on this machine now. Just about to the point where muscle memory knows where the controls are.
