Default What's Your Favorite 1/2" Air Impact Wrench?

Folks here probably already know that I get a little sentimental about my most beloved and trusted tools when they break. Seems to be happening a lot lately... and it's worse when my own negligence contributes to their demise. This past weekend, I managed to drop my trusty Campbell Hausfeld Model PL-1502 Air Impact Wrench. Not only did it take a good bounce or two on concrete, but dirt managed to get into the air inlet. No matter how much I tried to clean it out, blow it out, oil it, exercise it and get it working again... it was dead. I tried to order a "tune-up kit" for it, but the cost with shipping and the "ships in 10-to-14 days" stipulation means that I better put off any attempt to fix it for now and buy another air impact wrench ASAP for my pressing needs. The PL-1502, if/when fixed, can become my backup.

As much good, unfailing service as I have gotten out of my ~30 year old PL-1502, which is now discontinued but still widely available, buying the same model 30 years later may not be the wisest move. There are lighter, more powerful air impact wrenches available for less money. There are also better name brands available for not much more money. Some models are even made somewhere other than China! Hard to believe, but true.

Cost is always a major consideration for the dirt poor old Dougster™... but I'd like to ask the membership: What do you have for your main 1/2" air impact wrench? Would you buy it again for yourself... and would you recommended it to a friend?

I have 2. The oldest is a Chicago Pneumatic which has been a favorite for many years. My newest is a IR which seems to be a little stronger but also a little heaver. either one of these brands are a good reliable bet.

There is one thing you may need to check on since you live in PRM since they are shaped like hand guns do you need to have a special permit for them or are they prohibited altogether?

I understand that Chicago Pneumatic and Ingersoll Rand are the two top name brands here in the good ol' USA (even though some models of each are now made overseas)... but each makes about a dozen different 1/2" air impact wrenches. Do you have a particular model or models in mind? Or certain features/specs? Or are you just recommending the entire lines?

I think you must realize by now that we need a "special permit" for anything and everything up here in the PRM... ... and none of them take less than 4 months to get.

Fortunately, I am already fully licensed to carry an air impact wrench (although it must be stored locked and unloaded when I am not carrying it and I can only buy one a month).

I'll tell ya Doug. I'm please as can be with this one. I paid a bit more than it sells for now, but it's the most powerful 1/2 impact gun in the shop.

Awful nice Tim... under 4 pounds for 625 ft-lbs... but BOY, that sucker ain't cheap!

As a professional, what do you think of this one:

    Snap-on 1/2
    http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....&group_ID=2798

    or possibly this one:

CRAFTSMAN COMPOSITE IMPACT WRENCH BRAND NEW
    http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...6&blockType=G6

Obviously, I wouldn't be offering or paying the asking price for either.

As to the original question. My favorite is the one in my stable of working tools. Oh, it happens to be a CH model.

Have had it for many yrs and never give any thought as to brand or model since it does all I need.
Practice makes perfect: After many decade of hard work and practice, it now takes almost no effort to get tired.

Ray Bream - May the most you wish for be the least you get, - BUT work for it.

At 230 ft-lbs (and a mere 3 pounds), that is a 3/8" drive air impact wrench dressed up to look like a 1/2" air impact wrench! That wouldn't even loosen the tiny nuts holding together my el cheapo charcoal grill!

At about $300.00 out the door, I could have a dozen of those Horrible Fright air impact wrenches for the price of one of the Super IR Specials!

Fifteen of them if I used my usual Horrible Fright 20% off coupons!
