Default An Odd Phone Call And Offer...

The poor old Dougster™ was minding his own business the other day when the phone rang... and it was Horrible Fright headquarters on the line! Oh boy, I thought. This was not going to be good news.

The Background: Not long after I purchased my manual, portable hydraulic hose crimper, I decided that it would be to have an automatic/powered option available for when I was using it at home! Seemed like a real good idea at the time (although it has turned out to be totally unnecessary... but that's another story for another time).

I quickly figured out that this 10,000 psi air/hydraulic pump from Horrible Fright was my cheapest path (using a 20% off coupon, of course) to a fully-powered crimper:

    10,000 PSI Air Hydraulic Pump

I purchased it along with a 10,000 psi speciality hose (sold specifically for use with this pump) which has since been discontinued.

This is very much like the costly Enerpac air/hydraulic pumps... only Chinese made and mucho cheaper for poor folk like me.

The Problem: As it turns out, neither the 10,000 psi pump nor the 10,000 psi hose came with the second of two necessary speciality hose end fittings to allow them to be used as I had intended. No problem I thought... I'll just go out and buy one! But it turned out they are UNGODLY expensive through local sources and even kinda pricey through DHH. No problem I thought... I'll order another one through HF Parts! And I did... for very short money! Problem solved, right?

Time goes by and all was well (or so I thought) until the phone rang!

The Call: The guy on the phone from Horrible Fright had some very bad news. The part (specialty connector) I had ordered was unavailable and was not expected to ever be available. In fact, no parts for the pump I bought were ever expected to be available. HF had apparently broken ties with that particular manufacturer or there was some other issue. The guy on the phone said he really didn't know for sure. I was given two choices:

    1) I could cancel the parts order and HF would send me a $50.00 Horrible Fright gift card for doing so... or,

    2) I could return the air/hydraulic pump (but not the hose) to the HF store where I bought it for a full refund (less sales tax - a PRM law).

Question For Today: Given the facts as presented above, what would you have done???

The fact that parts will not be available would make it a no-brainer for me. I would have returned the pump for the money, sold the hose on fleabay or Craigslist, and requested a gift card or at least a significant discount coupon in addition - you never know until you ask! I would consider the either/or to just be their opening in negotiations.

Oh, and yes, I am just full of opinions!

Like Fred, it's a no brainer for me. Return the item for a refund.

I'll hold my other thoughts for now.
Practice makes perfect: After many decade of hard work and practice, it now takes almost no effort to get tired.

call the guy back, tell him to send you a UPS/Fedex return authorization and to also throw in some 50 dollar coupons if they want you to "continue" as a good customer!
"this morning I woke up with nothing to do, it is now afternoon and I have over half of it done".

Well, I asked for BOTH the $50.00 gift certificate (for wasting 6 weeks of my time) AND the right to return the air/hydraulic pump for a refund or store credit.

But it became real clear real fast that the guy I was talking to had no such authority to waiver from his assigned script. In the view of Horrible Fright, this was effectively a $50.00 price break for the fact that replacement parts weren't available and would never be available for the air/hydraulic pump I bought. Funny thing is... THEY ARE STILL SELLING THE DAMN PUMP... ... even though they know that there is no longer any parts support for it anymore!!!

Pretty dang weird situation if you ask me. So much for Horrible Fright's "bulletproof" parts support.
