    Question hot or cold

i need your input... I am replacing my exhaust and i need to take the bolts out of the manifold that hold the down pipe in. I dont want to snap them so i started to spray them with penetrating oil. my question is would it be better to spray them hot (warm) or cold?????? i can think of arguments for both so i am asking you

Use 50-50 mix of acetone and ATF as your penetrating fluid...let them soak overnight if possible.

Try leverage first, i.e. your strength on the wrench or socket driver.

If that fails, then extend the leverage arm of a breaker bar with a length of pipe if you cannot get enough force on the stuck muffler bolt...NOT a recommended practice...

Heat the muffler bolt with a propane torch if you can't remove it with wrenches or sockets...make sure you have your extinguisher on hand...

If all else fails, cut the stuck muffler bolt off...

How bad are they or how old are they? penetration oil for sure, maybe mix in with heat before the oil is put on...depending on what type of angle and wrenches available, I like using a pneumatic air gun, with maximum reverse torque (adjustable)....a good unit with at least 500 lbs torque...I find the vibration motion and the impact, lesson the likelihood of snapping bolts....I always snap when I hand torque something, but the impact I haven't snapped anything yet....just my two cents

I've had really good luck using DOT III brake fluid as a "penetrating oil".

No absolutes, but with a 50/50 shot (hot v cold) of one being the magic formula, I'd go with hot....

And, I've found over the years, if a bolt is gonna snap, it's gonna snap....If it's siezed, there's only a marginal likelyhood you'll break it loose without snapping the bolt....Often, it's best to just get it over with, then drill/tap the hole and get on with life.

I'm with Duc regarding the impact.... USUALLY works MUCH better than plain ol' brute force.

hey thanks for all the great ideas I am going to just keep using all of your suggestions cant hurt right

impact wrenches are the only way to go I hope that works or I will need to remove the manifold from the block to drill and tap it

    thanks for all your help
