Points: 0 | I changed the "mix" of my Foo-foo coffee this morning and it shows . Weatherwise there is a wall of water to our west and around Philadelphia heading our way. There are a few pretty decent preceding T-storm cells to your south east. I think things will start to happen around 3:00PM for you and you might get Tropical Storm Conditions tonight. I would estimate that you will ultimately get +2" rain, winds around 11mph gusting to 30+mph at times today and tonight. Things will calm down Sunday with most of the storm blowing out of your area around 8:00AM, cloudy to the afternoon, partly sunny late afternoon. Jay

Thanks very much (but please watch that coffee man!!!). Jayster forecast translated into Dougster™ English: "Expect to get no sleep whatsoever tonight and expect the basement to be flooded again by early morning. Park the ULDM and pickup truck so that falling trees won't hit them and park the hideous old A.R.E. where it is VERY likely to be crushed by a falling tree!

Points: 0 | In western MA we received 2.46" of rain with high wind gusts of 17mph yesterday and 21mph today. The wife and I were driving the backroads of MA during much of the worst part. I saw alot of branches down, but only one tree. There was some surface flooding. Partly sunny and breezy this morning. How did you make out? How did you make out? Jay | Hi Jay - Some branches and leaves down here... but no fallen trees and very little water in the basement thanks to some special precautions I took in anticipation of major flooding. I'm sure my gravel driveway is further eroded (haven't looked yet - what's the point?) 'cause BOY did it come down here last night! Mama Mia!!!
Naturally, I got unusually hungry right in the worst of it and went out in search of real food (gruel wouldn't have worked). I never did find anything open that I could afford, but man what a great carwash I got!!!
I think I made out reasonably well because the storm was moving so fast. Not enough time for major water to soak in and find its way into the basement... and plenty of wind following the rain to help dry things out.
Next big test: Ike!!!

Points: 0 | According to my data rain came down at ~1.00 - 2.00"/hour at times. My driveway stayed in pretty good shape, but I need to BB it this week anyways. I would think that it came down at a higher rate with higher winds closer to the coast. Glad your basement stayed relatively dry. The problem at my house... no matter how much I try to do about it... is that my rain gutters collect mucho roof debris and get blocked up almost instantly. Then they overflow on any good rain storm and the water goes right down into the basement with my 99.9% clay soil. My yard drainage system is useless against this "gutter overflow" water.
Yesterday, exasperated over the prospect of yet another basement flood, I laid out two large tarps over angled 4x8 sheets of plywood at the most critical overflow points. Obviously, it helped a lot.

At least once a year we get an inch or so at the bottom of the basement steps, it's worse when the gutters are plugged.... keep in mind this house was built in 1850. It has the original stone foundation, with a partial concrete floor...very good for snakes and mice. We have three cats. I cut a cat hole in the basement door so they can do their predator thing downstairs. | .... Tim | |
