    Default Land and trees

Just so we have another land clearing thread, working full time and doing this mostly by myself on weekends....not enough time, or energy, but progress is being made.

Between my house and the barn is an area that appears to have been dug out by a dozer years ago..when we moved in there were a few 20-30 year old trees growing. I cut them down right away. The first picture is after I cleared it mostly out.

2nd. pic: This summer I decided to use the area to store next winter's firewood. The wood is from the area behind the barn, it's being cleared for a horse ring, and another building.

3rd. pic: Area behind barn today. (note the forked tree)

4th. pic: same area shortly after we started clearing last year. (tree is right of center-slightly different angle)

5th. pic: same area after the horses trampled a bit, but the trees were still standing.

    Hey Tim,

Looking good. Appears to be a nice chunk of property. How many acres ?

Nice to be able to do it at your own speed and in your own time. Just not nice trying to fit it in.

I have some problems removing some trees. Around here they call them Hawthorns. Large thorns sticking out all over the darn things and very hard to kill. You think you have knocked it off and low and behold it starts to sprout on you. Worst is the root. Darn things are line vines. Have 1 growing in 1 spot and another 10' away and all the roots are connected to each other. On top of that, seems to be 1 root that always goes strait down fairly deep.

Been a real pain trying to get them out myself and getting tired of fighting with them. May get someone in with a large backhoe or dozer in the spring to take the last large group of them out.

Anyways, good luck on the project and keep plugging at it.

Later and have a good evening
    Tom

Hey Tom, about 7 acres, 5 are heavily wooded. We're hoping to add 12 more adjoining, we'll see...

My primary to-do list could be finished in a year..if I could take a year off. The secondary to-do list will take longer, but is better explained as "want to-do" (make a road around and across the property, suitable for a cart and horse riding)

A backhoe is a necessity, or I should say the minimum requirement, for the things I want/need to do. An excavator would be better for some things, but then I'd need a tractor also. When I convince myself I can buy an excavator ..use it for three years and sell it for what I have into it with no problems...well then I'll buy one...just haven't convinced myself it'll be problem free ..low cost...and easily resold.

A midsize excavator could solve your Hawthorne tree problem too. Here's to an unexpected financial windfall...and bigger toys.

You need a 33,000 lb excavator for three years!!! That L35 ain't enough for ya???

Most folks would be thrilled to death to have an L35 at their disposal for their own personal landwork!!!

Sounds like you WAY underbought Tim!!!

Oh, I must be in the wrong forum! Somehow I got the idea this place is for guys that would rather do it themselves, even if it's via overkill.
(BTW Doug, what's next on your wish list )

"I love my Kubota L35 TLB" it's perfect for 95% of what I'm doing, it's built like a tank, good power to weight ratio, small enough to get through the wood.

Now back to my recent fantasy . Let's see...oh, yeah in this fairy tale I find a 15,000 to 30,000lb excavator at a firesale price, a desparate seller, the ideal machine, under a thousand hours..5% of my work needs to be done..which one will it be.

The old Dougster™ is sitting here laughing so hard that he might fall off his chair!!! Help me to remember here Tim... What did you have for a backhoe when this year began???

Now we know that you bought that nifty L35... and then 4 minutes later you decided that even bigger would be even better (as in M59)... but a 33,000 lb track excavator??? For which you have 3 years work lined up???

What the hell are you building down there???

First things first...but some recon was done, I checked out the nearby neighborhood ponds, I've got a perfect spot, it'll be just under a half acre, at a good distance.....close to, and far enough away from the barn, the soil stays damp all year round.....

Draw backs...lots of trees and rocks.

Pluses...who cares about trees and rocks if you got the right machinery.
