Default Coating for Fence Post

Hi All,

Have some cedar fence posts ( 4X4 ) that were created from recycled hydro poles\telephone poles. Neighbour gets truck loads of them and then uses a portable mill to cut cedar siding ( did his whole pole barn ) posts, etc.

Before putting them in the ground, I would like to put some type of coating on them to ensure longevity. In the past, would have used creosote but hard to find now.

Was thinking about using a driveway sealer material ( tar based ).
Figure should be " fairly " enviromentally neutral since everyone uses it to coat their driveways.

Any thoughts ( pro's\cons ) ??

Thanks

Tom

my wife's grandfather put up a bunch of telephone poles to stop folks runing thru his yard after alomst getting hit 2x in 2 months. they would take the curve too fast, hit teh gravel, then shoot back across the road and go thru his yard. took otu the flag pole the first time and the second time hit teh car he was changing the brakes on. he had JUST got up adn walked to his tool box, otherwise he would be dead.

anyway, he got some poles that were already creosote soaked. the others he used roofing tar to seal the underground portions.

Hi,

Wow, unbelievable about your wife's grandfather. Talk about luck eh ?

That 2nd one was so close that he must be blessed with good luck.

I would have put up steel barriers or something but that is a good use of poles.

Hadn't thought of the roofing tar. Good idea and probably reasonable.

Wonder if an enviromental issues ( not that I am a green kind of guy )..

Thanks for the thoughts.

Later
Tom

I use the tar that is used to coat foundations. It comes in a 5 gallon bucket, so all I do is dip the post and put it in the ground.

Hey Gunmaker,

An even better idea. Since it is already used in the ground, at least I know it is eco friendly.

Thanks and have a great evening

Tom
