Default Past weekend

Went on an extended weekend camping trip. As mentioned in another post the weather was pretty bad for around here, hot/humid. Had 2 boats with us so plenty of room for all to get out on the water. First time Jeff has been able to have his boat along on a camp out since he bought the Travel trailer several yrs ago. Some boat racing and fishing while on the water. Thurs evening was beautiful on the water and heading back to camp there was a nice picture to be had with the full moon coming up between 2 Mt peaks.

With the warm/hot summer weather we've had, water temp in the low 70's, fishing wasn't very good but we did get a few rainbow trout while trolling. Give it another couple months and the water will be cooling off and the fishing will be picking up.

On Sat the lake was overrun with boats. While this is a nice sized lake I saw what I'd call too many off-shore sized boats. Quite a few people camping on their boat in some of the backwater coves. Was surprised to find a number of small water falls still running this late in the year.

Sure missed the fact that Common Sense has passed on, sure could have used his wisdom. Would have settled for CS relative, Common Courtesy. Fri night had a camper 2 spots down running their generator all night long. One camper tried to get them to shut it off without any success, ran the campers off at 1AM and we finally went down to the CG host and woke them up to get them to do something. Then the next morning they had a gall to take the site the people vacated after being run off the previous night. Sat even while trying to load the boat a small child was standing on the ramp blocking the way and young parents nearby didn't give a damn. Later trying to get in the dock to unload things and get the boat loaded, the same family was blocking the walkway and wouldn't move. What the hell is wrong with some people today?

The lake, Detroit is a nice man made reservoir made abt 50 yrs ago by building a dam across a canyon in the mts. Lake is 350' deep near the dam and runs up the canyon 5-7 miles depending upon water level. Up stream is the continuation of the Santiam river. Nice cold stream still running strong this time of yr.

Maybe we'll be able to get out camping again before the season is over.

That really looks like a peaceful place to vacation. Reminds me of Lake Cumberland in Ky about 40years ago, before civilization found it.

Thanks for the comments guys. This is a nice area and the biggest lake in the area. There are quite a few smaller natural lakes not far away.

Main purpose of the lake is water/flood control. Starting in Sept they start dropping the water level in prep for next springs run-off. Water level drops by at least a 100 ft. Think they learned a lesson a couple yrs back when we didn't have any snow over the winter and the lake looked terrible. There is an island in the middle of the lake and that yr you could walk out to the island from the town.

This past winter we had more than our share of rain and snow so the lake is still full and streams are flowing at a good rate.

Here is a link to a map of the area. Detroit Lake Area Information
Lots of recreational activities in the area.

Took a look at the weather reports and saw it got to 101 for 2 days in a row we were there. Suspect the humidity was in the 80%-90% range. The heat and humidity are now gone and the lake got .36" rain yesterday.

Here is another pic I like. Almost dark and starting to head back to camp. We were in one of the lakes larger arms.
