Hi Dougster, have you heard about the Snitch? Only read about it but it's pretty much what you were talking about. A little more than the $119.95 but quite a bit less than $500. Up here in Canada they are listing for $300 Cndn but a quick web search shows some at $$250 Cndn or less. That works out to app $200 US but may be cheaper down in the States. As I have only posted once on this forum, I can't post links just yet but just google Snitch and gps.

Very interesting... thank you!!! While not quite at my "pull the trigger" price point, it's closer than anything else I know of.

Also shows that my idea is not so crazy wacky after all!

I agree that the costs for such an item could be considerably lower. But as in any Buy/Sell system, the manufacturer will price it as high as the market will bear and still maintain adequate sales. Prices will drop as new technology comes along and different producers make the same thing but undercut someone else. In the end consumer hopefully wins.

Correct! At the end of the day, for the consumers anyway, competition is a beautiful thing!

Default Here is another possibility

Suntrac - Solar powered GPS tracker -- NaviGadget

Suntrac - Solar powered GPS tracker

Published on January 19th, 2009
Orion Technology from Taiwan has a few GPS tracking modules. Most of them are pretty basic; GPS, GSM enabled devices which are usually placed somewhere under the hood - use your car’s battery and have antenna connections for placing the receivers somewhere outside. However one of them stood out from the rest. Called Suntrac - this device is a solar powered GPS tracker which could be very useful where 12V power is not available. This could be your trailer, boat, caravan, or more industrial stuff such as shipping containers.
Suntrac is an all in one waterproof tracking device that contains GPS and GSM modules that can work around the world ( Tri-Band GSM / GPRS modules ( 850 / 1800 / 1900 and 900 / 1800 / 1900 ). And when cellular network signals are not available you can rely on Suntrac to record the position onto its 4MB internal memory.
It measures 320×280x41mm and weighs about 2 kgs. It is not the most discrete and portable thing out there but sometimes it is the only solution.
We haven’t seen Orion’s product anywhere in the States side yet but if you have do let us know.
