I started on my firewood today, and I only cut one tree... It was a big Maple, and when I cut it, the tree fell into another tree.... It would pop & crack, and was starting to split up.... I knew it would probably kick back, or sideways... So I went back to the house to eat lunch and give it some time to see if it would come on down.

While I was in the house it fell!!!.... Off to a bad start, But the first one is on the ground, and many more to go!!!

I got to use my new log hitch I made, and it worked great.... My wife also bought me a new ''JD helmet'' to wear when using a chainsaw.

Tomorrow I have a larger Maple to cut... I also have a large Beech that fell during the winter, but it will be hard to get out.. So I'll get it another day.

Anyone else cutting firewood ?? .... If you are, Then post!!!

In New England it's MUD SEASON not wood cutting season. Just about everything going on in the woods stops this time of year.

I dropped 2 trees last week. Both were struck by lightning last summer, both white oaks. Gonna let 'em lay for a few weeks until it dries up enough that I don't rut up the path into the woods. Also have 2 oaks and a hickory down on a property we mow. Gotta cut them up before we make this years first cut. Best part is, we'll get paid to saw 'em up and haul 'em away. With what wood comes from those trees, I should be good through 2010/2011 winter and well into the following years stock. Looks like I'll finish up this winter with about 6 or 7 ricks carry over.

More than just mud season here in Eastern Taxachusetts Ed. There has been some major flooding and major road & rail washouts in the past few days after a 60-year record breaking rainfall.

Oddly, for once the often-flooded basement of Dougster Manor remained 99% dry... ... although my entire yard is one very large swamp as of this morning. The front yard was partially washed away. Driveway? What driveway???

The GF was not so lucky. Major basement level flooding occurred at her Boston-area condo. We will have a lot of work to do there this weekend.

Working on the deliveries myself, now that the weather has broke -
I have it a little easier I guess, I just call up as I need it and its crane delivered (or dumped) - on my lot or elsewhere where needed...

I actually look forward in really getting into and feeling the sun and warmer weather again It has been a long, long, dark winter.....

My spirits were replaced with just that!

....It's Mud SeaSon here also!!!.... last year I had a mess because I cut 16 large popular trees in one day off the bank beside my home... They were too close to my barn and home.... A couple weeks after they were cut, we had a flood and the back water from the river got up in the bottom..... I had to wait about 2 months before I could even start pulling the trees out, and I worked all summer in the heat...(you can see the old thread from last year in this forum that Tim started)

I don't know if I will get to cut any today, because it rained all night.

I like Oaks & Hickory's!!!... I have 2 Oaks that fell during the winter, but they are up on the ATV trail behind my home... I can't get my tractor up there, and I wouldn't even try pulling them out in short lengths with my ATV, because the trail is steep & narrow.... I also have a big Beech near the bottom, and it will be hard to get.

I hate to see good wood go to waste... What I need is a dozer!!!

FWJ, How much is a ''cord of hardwood'' selling for in your area ??

I've been watching the flood on the news.... I hate to see homes get flooded like that..... The weather channel is showing Billerica, MA... Is that near your area ??.... They also showed NJ.

Sorry to hear that the GF's basement got flooded..... I would hate to see ''Dougster Swamp''!!!, and I hope you got your equipment out of there.... I remember you talking about your driveway being bad over a month ago.... Sounds like you need a 10-wheeler load of gravel.

... Yeah, It's pretty wood, and will burn great!!!.... I have plenty of Maple trees.... The trees I'm cutting now are trees that are in the way when I pull my firewood trailer through the woods.... I'm re-doing my trails through the bottom this year, because some places are like a 'S', and it's hard to get a tractor in some of the places.

You remember the woodshed from last year with all that popular wood.... I still have ''all of it''.... I've been working a little each day moving it to my enclosed shed... That wood will be for 2010/2011 season.... I started to sell some of it, but I probably couldn't get much for it, and I worked my arsh off last year cutting/splitting/stacking it.

The wood I'm cutting now is for 2011/2012 season.... I finally got 1 year ahead on firewood!!!.... I've never been this far ahead, and I'm sure the new wood-stove likes it!!!.... I'd like to be 2 years ahead, but the only way to do that is to work year round, and start putting wood on ''pallets'' like Brother Paul said.... I could leave it on pallets, and just put a tarp over the top of it.

(I had to re-type this 3 times, because it said the server was busy)

Yeah, You have it a little easier!!!

    Nice pictures!!!

I wish I could have wood brought to me like that!!!.... I could get a few years ahead real quick..... I wish the sun would come out here... I worked yesterday with the temps in the 40's, no sun, windy and the ground was wet, and some places was real muddy.

I hate pulling logs on wet ground because the mud gets on the bottom of the log, and I have to scrape the mud off so I don't ruin my new chains on my saws.

Do you have any Maple in that load ??

That Maple I cut yesterday was some good wood!!!
