Default Rusted Toyota Tacomas

To all MU members Toyota is "buying back" a lot of Tacomas (1996 - 2000) for major frame/structural defects. I had my 2000 Toyota Tacoma in great shape with only 78K mileage inspected for frame defects on Tuesday and according to the service department my frame failed in 12 areas. I am currently driving a rental Ford F-150 XLT at Toyota's expense until I get a "buy back" from Toyota . Jay

12 areas in such a short time period - YIKES! thats a safety hazard for all on the road. My 13 year old jeep grand Cherokee with 60k original, has zero rust frame or anywhere. What did Toyota use for steel, artificial sea coral or the artificial reef steel from an abandoned ship?

What Went Wrong, Company's Response

Toyota admits it failed to rustproof the frames on 800,000 Tacoma pickups from 1995 to 2000. Result: they can rust through to the point of collapse.

But rather than offer a band aid fix, or say "sorry, you're out of warranty".... Toyota will buy back rusty Tacomas --paying a bonus over Blue Book -- if its techs find frame rot.

If you own a rusting Tacoma, set up an appointment with your local dealer. They will inspect it and determine if you qualify for a buyback.

It is my understanding that the buy back is 1.5X Blue Book value. My truck was in really good shape except for all the dog hair in the cab and nose prints on the windows. The service people told me that 85% of all Tacomas are failing inspection; on the day I had my truck inspected it was 5 for 5 failure (100%). A lot of people are telling me I should expect ~$15K for my truck , but now I have to go through the hassle of car salespeople . I am currently driving at Toyota's expense (excepting gas) a Ford F-150 XLT quad cab. That Triton V-8 has some cajones, but is very thirsty. I spent $100 to fill it up . It is my impression that Toyota "admits" to a substandard steel formulation as a cost saving measure during the years 1996 - 2000 on its Tacomas. Jay

Hi Jay - You are hearing substandard steel. I an hearing lack of proper rustproofing. I'll bet the real truth is a little of both!

Dougster:

I just did a Doppler shot of your area and it looks pretty humid, but everything to the west of you is clear. I did a quick look at some weather data and I think you are good to go with your projects today. The atmosphere is still pretty unstable so there is a chance for T-storms, but I'd chance it. Jay

Sounds good Jay. With my two new mini-ex buckets in hand, work on the old ULDM bucket can be put off if necessary... but other critical welds need to be made. Likewise, I can put off some of the "cosmetic" painting... but some parts need to be primed and painted before re-assembly.

I sure would like to be in a position to use the ULDM on next week's job.

I should clarify that its a bad situation for the ones in the mix of it - didn't mean to make light of it. If was me i would be just a Little sensitive and angry about it....ok actually a lot both of them

Duc:

I had a small cookout yesterday. 3 of the 4 males (including myself) were Tacoma owners. All of us really liked our trucks. One guy sold his Tacoma right before the "buyout" started He only got $7K when he probably would have gotten ~$15K, and I believe the person who bought his Tacoma is screwed due to length of ownership. He got a great deal on a Tundra anyways. The other guy mad out fairly well- he got ~$12k for his Tacoma that he bought used for around $12K acouple of years ago. His problem is that he bought a Ranger and he does not like it at. For myself I am just waiting to hear from Toyota while driving that Ford 150 XLT. Most Tacoma owners I know are pretty happy about this buyout; excepting the 15% of the owners whose trucks "passed" the inspection. Jay
