Taxachusetts law requires them in place of flaggers on any road job no matter how ridiculously small and the cops make $40/hour average in 4 hour minimum chunks. 1 hour equals $160. 4-1/2 hours equals $320. Mostly the cops just sleep in their cars or chat on the cell and drink coffee and eat donuts. It is like dying and going to heaven for them. Free money. Many of our Taxachusetts cops make over $200K per year before any other income generating enterprises.
The good news is that this absurd extortion scheme keeps them out of our faces during most off hours. It's the price we pay for fewer "surprises."
