Bob Lutz is most definitely a PUTZ

I think what we need to do is to get the auto manufacturers and the environmentalists in the same room and let them have a free for all.

As it stands right now because of environmental concerns we are REDUCING the efficiency of both the gasoline and diesel engines. Take the emission control junk off these things and concentrate on EFFICIENCY. If you do you kill two birds with one stone.

Doesn't and engine that runs on half the fuel it use to also put out half the emissions?????????????????????

    I don't know maybe I'm a PUTZ

That's exactly the problem that all diesel manufacturers are having to deal with right now...EMISSIONS STANDARDS are becoming stricter...That's why the newer TIER tractors have more ccs and less hp...

I know it is the popular thing to do, but I wouldn't be so hard on ole' Bob. The man speaks the truth re: automotive diesel engines and high costs/difficulties/efficiency loss of meeting coming emissions standards whether you want to hear it or not. I suggest folks take the time to research this topic from physics, engineering and commercial viewpoints (rather than purely a political/big business bashing viewpoint) before calling old Bob a scoundrel and a liar. He may be one, of course, but on this one issue I believe he is pretty much telling it like it is.

Youre correct! now add in less fuel efficient too, and what does that tell you? if something burns more fuel traveling the same distance as a model prior, dosent this turn into more fuel being burned and alas more emissions being released? Its a chicken or egg thing - cant have one without the other. Im glad my diesels arent Tier II -

All of this carbon footprint air pollution global warming climate change nonsense is not the huge problem everyone wants us to believe it is. Break it apart and examine it. The EPA knows full well that burning more fuel pollutes more air but they come up with these ridiculous standards anyway that make us pay more at the pump and at the dealership.
thats my 2 cents for what they are worth.
