Default Stuck the truck like a buck in a ruck with no luck

    ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    ****

Go out to do this 26 acre pasture, it's all wide open, nothing there, it's going to be houses (yeah, in like 15 years, maybe) and I pull up on the side of the road.

Hmmm, this road is a little busy, don't know that I want to sit here half on half off the road (turns out not to be busy at all, but I'm getting ahead of my story).

So, I get out and walk around the pasture, make sure it's dry, will support the semi, no big holes, etc.

    Ok, seems fine.
I back up, get way over the left get in there, get past the telephone pole and start turning.
Get to 175 degrees and zing.
    spin spin spin

    WTF????????

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, ****
Throw in the lockers, throw in the anti-spin.
    Nothing.
    **** **** ****

Ok, we'll unload the tractors and we'll pop right out.

    NOT

Try pulling the semi with the little tractor.
    nothing
try pulling the semi with the big tractor
    nothing

    Now, we're ****ed.
There's no other car, there's nothing around, the wife is with me.
    ****
I know what I need is the dump truck or maybe some shovels or something, but I can't leave because I've stuck my truck (****)

Finally call one guy from church who's a Mr Mom. He's home, his older kids are home to watch the youngers and he comes.
he brings some shovels, we dig, nothing, we pull with the big tractor after digging more, nothing. It's just at a real bad angle, even with the lockers (not full lockers, just side to side), it's not working).
Fine, we jump in his car to go back to my house to pick up the dump truck. His car overheats on the way.
The fan isn't turning on we finally figure out (and no, it wasn't a fuse), so I drive the dump truck over to the dealer so he can drop it off.
We take the dump truck back over (by now it's noon mind you, the wife has been chugging around with the bat wing so it's not a total loss).
I hook up a couple chains, get the dump truck back to the pavement and I just put it in low low low reverse and it YANKS THE DAMN SEMI OUT.

just put the semi in neutral made sure the brakes were off and didn't even put it in gear.

    Needed more weight apparantly.

So it's unstuck, which I suppose is good news, but damn
I told the wife, next time I say "let's park in the pasture" REMIND ME OF THIS.

    Ugh
    what a day.

well, only because we got it out. (truly, that big old HEAVY dump truck just pulled it like nothing.)

My friend who saved my ass was asking me on one trip back "is **** your favorite word?"

Well, only if I get pissed off.
And I don't know about favorite, but certainly the most versatile. noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc, etc, etc

"even with the lockers (not full lockers, just side to side" Is the Columbia "tandem rear axle" (I know I've seen the pictures but I don't have time to "go look" right now)? I'm familiar with both the "side to side" (locks both axle shafts on one "third member") and the "power divider" or "interaxle lock" ( locks "two, or more, "third members" together". In case any youngsters don't recognize the term "third member" or "3rd member".......it's a "quaint" old monicker for the drive axle assembly. Called third member by its hierarchy in the "power train". #1, engine...#2, transmission...#3, drive axle and differential assembly (or "assemblies". So, you say "just "side to side" lockers. I'll get back to the photos of your Columbia this weekend, but even then it might not be "clear" whether you have "live tandem", tag axle tandem, or pusher axle tandem. It would of course be clear whether it was "tandem" or not, but the rest might bear some asking about. If it is supposed to be "live tandem" with "axle shaft to axle shaft" lock, in addition to "power divider" lock......you should have been able to "lock" all four wheel ends (on the rear) together. Let's talk about it.

    The columbia is a tandem.
But Not a power divider (aka full lockers), just locks each 3rd member.

    so 2x2 so to say

and it does have anti=spin (which does precisely dick that I've been able to notice)

The mack on the other hand does have a power divider.

Heh heh! So what you are able to do is to "lock up" each 3rd member, but after doing that, whichever axle (forward rear" or "rear rear") has the LEAST traction.......is still able to "spin its wheels" while the other one just sits there looking stupid. Is that a fairly accurate description? If you get time to (and feel inclined to) you could post some photos of the forward axle assembly showing the "power divider" and any air plumbing serving that portion of the assembly. I can't imagine why Freightliner would include the "side to side" locking differentials and then disable or even delete the "locking interaxle differential" (power divider section) on the forward axle. I remember how power divider equipped trucks could "lock the power divider in" to force power to flow to both rear axles when traction was low. Usually, doing that would offer enough additional traction to prevent the dreaded "one wheel out of four spinning and I'm stuck" scenario. The "power divider" is nothing more than a differential to "divide the input power to the 3rd members in half" so that 50% of the power serves the forward axle and 50% of the power serves the rear axle. The "main differential" (inside the ring gear "chunk") of each 3rd member further divides its 50% of power in half so that the left and right axle shafts receive 50% of the 50% ( that means each axle "wheel end" is given a 25% share of the power output from the transmission). OK, before the advent of "side to side" lock up differentials in Class 8 trucks, you only had the option of "locking in the power divider", which would guarantee 50% of transmission power feeding each of the 3rd members. Even with the power divider "locked in", the "main differential" in each third member could feed power to the least tractive wheel end (which would spin like hell while the opposite wheel sat still and looked stupid). You could end up with a spinning wheel on each 3rd member and still be stuck (even though you had the power divider locked and IT was working OK). So now, on this '03 Columbia, have we just exchanged the ability to "spin one wheel on each 3rd member" for the ability to "spin both wheels on just one 3rd member" (while the two wheels on the other 3rd member just sit still and........)? If Freightliner has done this intentionally, there just aren't words to describe how badly their engineers have missed the entire point by cheating the drivers out of maximum traction by FAILING TO PROVIDE side to side lock in conjunction with power divider lock.
