New one is a long drink of water OAL is only 6' more but the deck makes it look huge. empty weights went from 2K to 3780 so the payload didn't change. No more interference & bent fenders!!

You can land small planes on that thing!

Then turn them around and they can take off again!

Default Epilogue

After mucho additional research with the RMV, the manufacturers of my two trailers, various trailer parts companies and my insurance agent in regard to my probable 400-500 lb trailer gross weight overage... here is where I ended up:

Today, with the permission of both my insurance agent and the RMV, I registered my two 10,000 lb GVWR trailers at 11,000 lbs each. No further mods are planned for the time being, but I still intend to upgrade the 10K non-adjustable coupler on my equipment trailer to 14K height-adjustable before fall, revenue permitting.

This move and expenditure may not make a hoot of sense to or for anyone else, but I figure that the extra $24.00 I spent is cheap insurance against some SOB cop possibly asking me to separate my trailer from the truck for independent weighing. I may or may not lose the argument re: exceeding the trailer manufacturer's original GVWR sticker (i.e., if weighed independently so as to include tongue weight)... but I sure as heck won't lose the second argument re: exceeding state registered weight.

I also wish to correct one previous point: I had stated that the only differences between a 6-lug 5,200 lb axle and a 6-lug 6,000 lb axle were the outer bearings and races. This is not correct. New hubs are also required to accept those larger bearings/races. On axles with drum brakes, new hubs/drums are required as well as upgraded brake shoes to be 100% compliant.

Before any hardcore safety folks jump all over me, please keep in mind that my dump trailer is, in effect, a derated 12K trailer from Day One to which I have added the missing 12K 16" wheels and 14K 16" radial tires. It already came from the factory with 6K (or greater) axles and all other components.

My 20-ft equipment trailer was built as a 10K-12K-14K capable unit (frame and springs) which I bought with 5,200 lb axles, wheels, tires and a 10K coupler. I have since upgraded the wheels to 12K and tires to 14K as above. Only the bearing/hub/drum and coupler upgrade remain for this to be a fully compliant 12K trailer; however, based on the manufacturer's recommendations, no further changes were deemed immediately necessary to run at ~10,400 to 10,500 lbs.

I used to own an ant farm but had to give it up. I couldn't find tractors small enough to fit it.

Amen Brother Paul. This may or may not help... but other than the $24 I had to borrow from my piggy bank, it surely can't hurt.
